The Global Chip Shortage: What IT Leaders Need to Know

A delayed hardware order is no longer just a procurement problem. It can hold up a network refresh, push back an office opening, leave unsupported equipment in place or force an organisation to rethink a wider transformation project. The global chip shortage is making hardware prices, availability and delivery times harder to predict. For IT leaders with projects planned over the next 12-18 months, the message is simple: 

Don’t panic-buy. But don’t wait until the hardware becomes urgent to start planning. 

Why This Matters Now 

Technology procurement begins long before an order is placed. Requirements must be understood. Solutions need to be designed. Budgets have to be approved. Products must be checked for compatibility, security, licensing and support. When supply is stable, those decisions can be made around relatively dependable prices and lead times. When availability changes quickly, the same process carries more risk. 

Waiting could mean discovering that: 

  • The project no longer fits its approved budget 
  • Your preferred equipment is unavailable 
  • Delivery will miss an important business deadline 
  • The available alternative introduces technical compromises 
  • Existing hardware will reach end of support before its replacement arrives 

The question is not simply, “Should we order today?” it’s, “what happens to the business if this equipment does not arrive when we need it?” 

What Is Driving the Shortage? 

The rapid growth of AI is creating huge demand for the specialist memory used in data centres. Manufacturers are directing more production towards AI infrastructure and other high-value server technologies. That leaves less capacity available for the memory used across the wider technology market. 

IDC believes this could represent a longer-term market shift rather than a short-lived interruption, with the effects potentially continuing into 2027 and the consequences will not be limited to organisations investing directly in AI. Memory is used across servers, storage, laptops, network and security appliances, meeting-room systems and digital signage. Every finished product also depends on several components being available at the same time. If one critical part is delayed, the complete system can be delayed with it. 

What Could It Mean for Your Organisation? 

The impact will vary by product, configuration and manufacturer. However, there are three risks IT leaders should be planning around:

  1. Less Predictable Delivery 

Equipment that was previously readily available may become subject to allocation, extended lead times or sudden changes in availability. A delivery delay can then affect far more than the hardware itself. It may disrupt installation schedules, office moves, support arrangements and the availability of internal or third-party technical teams. 

  1. More Pressure On Budgets 

Prices may change while projects are moving through approval, and suppliers may be unable to hold quotations for as long as they once did. Gartner expects significant pressure on memory pricing, with meaningful relief potentially not arriving until late 2027. Read Gartner’s forecast. That makes early budget conversations particularly important. A project approved using recent assumptions may look very different by the time the organisation is ready to order. 

  1. Fewer Suitable Choices 

If a preferred model or configuration is unavailable, an alternative may still be possible. But “available” does not automatically mean “suitable”. A replacement must still be assessed for performance, security, compatibility, management, licensing and long-term support. Choosing whatever is in stock may solve an immediate supply problem while creating additional cost and complexity elsewhere. 

Where Should IT Leaders Focus First? 

This is not a reason to order every piece of planned hardware immediately. It’s a reason to identify where a delay would hurt most. Start with the projects and equipment connected to: 

  • Hardware approaching end of life or end of support 
  • Security appliances with upcoming renewals 
  • Infrastructure supporting critical business services 
  • Capacity upgrades required within the next 6-12 months 
  • Office moves, site openings or fixed launch dates 
  • Standardised estates where substitutions would add complexity 

This creates a risk-based priority list. It allows designs and budgets to be agreed earlier, gives procurement teams more time and makes it possible to assess suitable alternatives before they are urgently needed. 

Create Options Before They Narrow 

The best response to supply uncertainty is not buying more hardware than you need. It is creating more options while you still have them. That means connecting the technology roadmap with support expiries, procurement plans and important business dates. It means identifying hardware dependencies earlier and understanding which projects have room to move and which do not. It also means avoiding decisions based on availability alone. A replacement product might look similar on paper, but even a small change can affect performance, security, licensing, management, installation or user experience. The right alternative must still support the outcome the original solution was designed to deliver.
