Visit Scotland – Tourism – Video Wall

The brief

Izon Projects are a Scottish firm specialising in the
design and build of interiors. Izon were looking for a partner to supply a digital signage video wall solution for the brand new iCentre for Edinburgh.

The brand new visitor information centre within the City Chambers on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh has seen an investment of £400,000 to provide a ‘welcoming and attractive’ experience, offering information through a wide variety of tools to ensure visitors experience the best of the city and Scotland as a whole.

Graham from Izon Projects got in contact with Vizst Technology after seeing a digital
signage video wall system similar to what they were looking for at Vizst’s customer Tumi in Covent Garden, London.

Our solution

The digital signage solution was a vertically orientated video wall or ‘totem pole’ as it’s also known, constructed in a 1 x 5 arrangement, in a window, externally facing onto the busy Royal Mile in Edinburgh. Vizst Technology specified ultra HD Samsung screens for this project as a reliable and cost-effective solution.

Behind the screens is an Android signage player running with Wallboard Display software which is ideal for this kind of digital signage video wall solution. The displayed content is 4K, 3840 x 2160 resolution.

For the 4K resolution to be accurately positioned across 5 screens in a totem pole, specialist video wall control units were used. Vizst worked with visit Scotland for the content to be created in the correct aspect ratio. Key aspects of this project were the installation of the screens within a custom-built housing, made by Izon Projects, with the elements for consideration being ventilation and power supply.

Vizst Technology specified a single output signage player in 4K resolution for Visit Scotland, negating the need for a large 5 screen video wall controller. The benefits of having only one signage player are cost savings, ease of content updates and the ease of creating content as only one signage player is involved.

“Investment in the flagship stand-alone centre is part of a dynamic strategy to respond to changes in the way visitors access information. New technology is a key element of the visitor experience at the Royal Mile site, which is reflected in its dynamic design. While visitors are encouraged to move fluidly around the space and make use of the stand-up desks and ticketing system in place, they can take inspiration from the interactive screens displaying locations from across Scotland.”
